This is one of Ravel's early piano pieces, composed while he was studying at the Paris Conservatory (1899). Ravel later arranged it into an orchestral piece himself.
Ravel explained that the Pavane for a Dead Princess wasn't mourning a princess that had actually died, but a wistful daydream of something a sixteenth-century Spanish princess might have danced to.
