Watching a parent pick up a baby that was reaching up prompted this song. Taking care of our 5 adopted grandchildren for several days during Christmas break, brought home many truths about our Heavenly parent. The idea of God as a Heavenly Father was new with Jesus. (Matthew 5-7; 6:8-9 and 7:7-11) The ancient rabbinic writings do not use this metaphor until after the life of Christ. Surely Jesus' teaching that God is our Father and therefore we are brothers hit an unexpected chord in its hearers.

Paul amplifies these thoughts in Romans 8:13-23, Galatians 3:24-4:7, and Ephesians 1:3-6. Dada, Papa, and Abba are the sounds that babies make when they first begin to label their fathers. There is a wonderful intimacy in these passages that show us the Ideal Father, the father we all wish we could be or wish we had. The holy God who created the Universe yearns for His children to return His love.
