Product Description

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) wrote this charming little waltz for piano (or harpsichord) in 1859 the year of his marriage to former opera singer, Giuseppina Strepponi. It was composed at a time when Verdi had achieved considerable fame and prosperity, following the success of operas such as Nabucco, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore  and La Traviata.  It is not known if there was any specific motivation behind its composition. He wrote very little piano music but perhaps the fact that it was never published during Verdis lifetime means it was simply written for enjoyment: well never know.

The piece lay undiscovered until it was unearthed by another Italian composer Nino Rota. Rota was perhaps best known for his film scores particularly his collaborations with Fellini and Visconti. It was for Visconti that Rota decided to adapt the F major Waltz for the soundtrack to the 1963 film  Il gattopardo  (The Leopard). Rotas orchestrated version accompanies an opulent, hour-long ballroom scene.

Created in 1963, the film classic Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) by Luchino Visconti is a social drama set at the time of the Italian Risorgimento and told in sumptuous images. For the music of this classic featuring Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon, Visconti could have found no better musical partner than the Italian composer Nino Rota who, three years earlier, had written the film music of Rocco e i suoi fratelli.

Il Gattopardo was a special challenge to Rota because of the contrasts between the grand domestic scenes and the civil war sequences. But his extraordinary talent for putting every subtle difference in atmosphere into melodies laid the foundations for one of the most brilliant film scores ever written. Perfect timing is combined in a unique way with great dramatic sound interwoven with original dances by Giuseppe Verdi written just before the time in which the film is set.

For the concert hall, Rota made a large-scale dance suite which is virtually a symphony, appealling to both musicians and listeners in its formal unity, but above all in its pure tonal beauty.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa which is about the decline of the Sicilian aristocracy in 1860-1862 during the period of the "Risorgimento" and thus almost exactly contemporary with Rotas find.
